Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse

Our Vision : To end Child Sexual Abuse, Sexual Violence and Gender-Based Violence
- Sonal Kellogg

Mission:

To protect all children from sexual abuse and women from sexual violence and gender-based violence through awareness campaigns and advocacy for proper laws and policies to empower children and women. To provide an eco-system to support victims of sexual abuse; whether children or adults. Also to support women who are facing gender-based violence.

Goal: To ensure that all children have undergone Personal Safety Education and to help all victims of CSA and gender-based violence have access to counseling, legal advice and rehabilitation schemes, both children and adult survivors of CSA and victims of gender-based violence

Sub-goal 1: To ensure that age appropriate educational curriculum for all children is prepared for class 1 to class 8 in all states by the education departments of all states in India by January 2021 and included in the curriculum in school in the next academic session. For CBSE schools that means to be included in the academic session in March-April 2021

Sub-goal 2: To see that teachers from all schools have undergone training to be able to teach students about personal safety education by the academic year 2021-22

Sub-goal 3: To ensure that all CSA survivors have access to counseling and are able to get counseling for the required time consistently even if they are unable to afford to pay for it

Sub-goal 4: To ensure that there is a centre in each district of India where people who are sexually abused can get help. This needs to begin with 3-5 centres in each state first and wherever possible to have more than more centres in a state and then to multiply this to each district. This has to be done in a phased manner but the goal is to reach all districts with collaborations and partnerships

Sub-goal 5: To provide legal help to survivors of Child Sexual Abuse and sexual violence

Sub-goal 6: To help in the rehabilitation of survivors of CSA and other sexual violence like rape

Sub-goal 7: To create awareness about Child Sexual Abuse and sexual violence in all media through traditional and creative means.

Testimonial

Sabfree is a safe space whose time has come.

Barely a day goes by without at least one report from somewhere in the country about children being sexually abused in a range of places that are assumed to be refuges where their well-being, safety and security are at the top of the agenda: homes and schools. Religious institutions are also emerging as sites where children are not safe from abuse.

The latest available official crime figures suggest that in over 95% of the reported cases of sexual assault, including cases involving children, the offender was known to the victim/survivor. In nearly 10% of the cases an immediate or close family member or other relative was the perpetrator. Neighbours were the predators in over a quarter of the cases (nearly 29%) and other known persons were the culprits in over a third of the cases (nearly 35%). Sexual offences, together with kidnapping and abduction, constituted 81% of all crimes against children. To make matters worse, crimes against children appear to be on the rise. (NCRB data, 2015)

While the statistics are shocking and frightening, it is even more disturbing to recognise that they represent just the tip of a huge iceberg. The majority of children and adults who experience sexual violence are unable to report them even to close family and friends, let alone the police. In the case of children, especially, even if they summon up the confidence and courage to confide in an adult they love and trust, they are often not believed or advised to keep quiet, conceal, forget (if not forgive) – for their own sakes, they are told.

It is this enforced, damaging silence that Sabfree seeks to break. The truth shall set us free.
